Inhomogeneous and Strongly Correlated Materials with Advanced Functions Prof. N.L. Saini (Dipartimento di Fisica

This symposium will address one of the important themes in the condensed matter physics, i.e., structure function relationship in the intrinsically inhomogeneous materials with advanced functional properties involving novel quantum state of matter such as the superconductivity, the ferroelectricity, colossal magneto-resistance (CMR), metal-insulator transitions. Various quantum phase transitions will be discussed along with control and manipulation of different phases involved in these inhomogeneous systems related with complex interplay of charge-spin-lattice degrees of freedom and topological defects in the fundamental electronic structure. The symposium is part of the meeting “Study of Matter at Extreme Conditions (SMEC 2007)”, being held in Miami Beach, (FL, USA), during April 15-20, 2007.
The symposium welcomes contributions based on theoretical, experimental and applied aspects of the physics, chemistry, materials science on the following topics:
a) Intrinsic structure of functional materials and microscopic electronic inhomogeneities.
b) Cuprate perovskites and other short coherence length superconductors.
c) Role of lattice effects in the functions of inhomogeneous materials
d) Ferroelectrics, colossal magnetorestive materials, nickelates, and other oxide perovskites.
e) Order-disorder and displacive ferroelectric like transitions in the perovskites
f) Graphite like inhomogeneous structures
g) Carbon based functional materials
h) Multiband functional materials
i) Control and manipulation of different phases and functions in the inhomogeneous materials by external conditions
j) Artificial heterostructures and low dimensional systems.
The scientific program consists of invited talks, contributory talks and posters.
